Blue Planet Aquarium

Sightseeing attraction | Ellesmere Port | England | United Kingdom

Aquarium for marine lovers

The "Blue Planet Aquarium" in Ellesmere Port, England, is one of the most significant attractions for marine and freshwater enthusiasts in the UK and is among the largest aquariums in the northwest of the country. Situated near the well-known Cheshire Oaks shopping center, it offers visitors a fascinating journey through the underwater world – from tropical coral reefs to freshwater rivers and the depths of the ocean. Since its opening by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998, the aquarium has established itself as a place that both entertains and educates about the marine environment.

Underwater tunnel in Europe

The centerpiece of the Blue Planet Aquarium is the impressive underwater tunnel, which at 71 meters in length is one of the longest of its kind in Europe. Visitors are guided through this tunnel on a moving walkway and can marvel at Europe's largest collection of sharks, including species such as sand tiger sharks and lemon sharks, swimming above and beside them. Alongside the sharks, rays, tropical fish, and other marine creatures share the huge tank, providing an immersive underwater safari experience. For the more adventurous, there is even the opportunity to dive with the sharks – an experience that must be booked in advance.

Interactive animal feeding aquarium

The aquarium is divided into different thematic zones reflecting different habitats. In the "Amazon" area, visitors can discover exotic freshwater fish such as piranhas and arapaimas while surrounded by the sounds of a rainforest. The "Coral Reef" zone showcases colorful corals and fish species like clownfish, made famous by movies like "Finding Nemo." Another highlight is the "Lake Malawi" exhibit, depicting the biodiversity of this African lake known for its unique cichlids. In the "Venom" section, the brave can get up close to venomous creatures like scorpionfish or stonefish, while outside in the open area, otters can be observed playing.

Daily shows at aquatheatre

Daily shows and feedings at the "Aquatheatre" provide additional insights into the life of marine animals. Professional divers dive into the main tank to feed the animals and share more about their behaviors with visitors. These performances are particularly popular with families as they are interactive and educational. For children, there is also an outdoor pirate adventure playground with slides, climbing ropes, and a stranded ship to explore – a welcome change after indoor activities.

Education about marine environment

The Blue Planet Aquarium places great emphasis on education and sustainability. The over 100 living exhibits are designed not only to impress but also to raise awareness about protecting the marine environment. Visitors learn more about the threats facing oceans and the role aquariums can play in conservation. The animals, including crocodiles, seahorses, and jellyfish, are kept in carefully recreated habitats reflecting their natural conditions.

For visitor convenience, there is a café on-site offering a relaxed atmosphere with views of the aquariums, as well as a souvenir shop with maritime mementos. The aquarium is wheelchair accessible with ramps and elevators, making it accessible for those with limited mobility. Parking is available, although it is advisable to arrive early as space may be limited on busy days.

The architecture of the building itself is remarkable: it was designed in the shape of a crashing wave, emphasizing its connection to the sea. Since its opening, the aquarium has received numerous awards, including one for the shark diving experience, which is considered one of the best tourist experiences in the region. It is a place that appeals to both families and individual visitors, whether they are exploring the underwater world or simply looking to spend an entertaining day.

Great aquarium. Visited for the first time in a while with my boyfriend, and he really enjoyed himself. Love the feedings and shows. It's a shame that the pelicans aren't currently there due to the bird flu, but we'll definitely visit again.

Went for my daughter’s birthday. Had a lovely day with the family. Can see it getting really busy but it wasn’t bad on the day we were there. Fish look happy and healthy and the staff we saw were really friendly. It’s pricey but worth it.

Definitely not value for money. Very disappointed will not be going there again. £50.65 for 1 adult and 2 children and one child was free

Great family trip out, lots of great things to see. The kids loved seeing the animals. Only small downside was a lack of sign posting, the guide tells you what time special events take place in the day but no detail on which part of the aquarium. A few more signs leading you around would be beneficial as we almost left without seeing the main shark tunnels as the entrance is located behind a side wall from the auditorium, which you naturally walk straight up to as its huge and impressive so easily miss the other side entrance. I'd also say take your own food as the food prices were so expensive for what you get plus a long wait in peak times.

I took my daughter and her bestie here for a Junior Shark Dive experience and couldn't recommend it enough. Going and visiting the aquarium is one thing, but this trip really gets behind the scenes of the work that goes on here. There's some very cool and friendly staff who want to help young people not only understand more about the marine biology of site and the breeding that's done here but the technical aspects of diving safely and enjoying being an actual fish for half an hour. It's one of those magical experiences for young people that helps them understand more about the world we live in and perhaps what they can do in it when they are older. We fed the big fish from above the tanks, and then after a comprehensive and in-depth training session, the kids go into the tank with experienced diving staff who take full care of them. Yes, it's not cheap, but it's worth every penny when you see how much care and attention goes into it. Even though I was only with them and didn't get wet, I loved it too! Great work, Blue Planet x

We bought a membership when my son was born, it was definitely worth it. Lovely place for a sensory experience for babies, though it's a shame they've reduced the interactive things for children over the years.

I think it's a little bit on the expensive side. Tho toilets need doing up and the taps didn't work on majority of them. It was ok, the kids enjoyed it.

Myself and 5 year old went during half term - I booked tickets via the kid for a quid offer, which I thought was quite good value - it cost £28 for the two of us. If Id have paid full price, I wpuld have felt a little ripped off. The actually aquarium isnt really that big to walk round and I felt that we looked at most things quite quickly. Some of the exhibits were great, especially the Octopus and Shark tunnel, which my son loved. However we walked round 3 times, had lunch and went to the play area twice and we still only managed to pass 3 hours. I wouldnt say its somewhere you could stay all day. I also have to add that the place is not very pram friendly - it is very narrow in parts and when its busy its horrendous trying to make it through some of the exhibits.
